Interview: Jaewoo Chon (CEO) | Hyperspandrel (Soul, KR)

a) Keďže sme Ázijci, nemohli sme si módne založiť kanceláriu podľa svojich mien.
Hello Jaewoo, at first, we are very grateful that we had an opportunity to have you in Bratislava, especially in our Faculty of Architecture and Design after two years break, at our favorite event Night of Architecture.
Thank you! it was crazy for you to invite me and also crazy for me to come as well, haha.
(SK): Ďakujem! bolo to šialené, že ste ma pozvali, a vlastne šialené, že som prišiel, hah.
You came to us from South Korea, can you believe it? how was your trip? Did you bring some sweets?
(SK): Prišiel si k nám až z Južnej Kórey, veril by si tomu? Aký bol tvoj let? Priniesol si sladkosti?
Yeah I can’t believe it either. it’s been a while since I’ve traveled. But then again, is it so crazy? I mean we are in 2022! Perhaps we have globally gotten so unfamiliar with international travel given the collective hiatus. Everyone was asking me, why the heck are you going all the way to Slovakia? Why not just do Zoom?! It’s funny how that has become the acceptable norm. Makes sense though I guess.
(SK): Áno, ani ja tomu nemôžem uveriť. Už je to nejaký čas, čo som cestoval.
You stayed in Vienna for one day, and also in Bratislava, can you describe (if seen) some general cultural / architectural diferences inbetween these two cities and Seoul?
(SK): Zostal si jeden deň vo Viedni a v Bratislave, vieš nám popísať nejaké všeobecné kultúrne / architektonické rozdiely medzi týmito dvoma mestami a Soulom?
Just from size and density alone the urbanism in Seoul functions dramatically differently. Seoul is voraciously cannibalistic of its urban fabric because there’s simply never enough land. In Korea, a thirty-year-old building is considered very old; often they are torn down and rebuilt. There’s very little room and time for waste. I think the city is starting to become aware of the need to preserve, but realistically speaking, it is extremely difficult for a city to collectively dwell on architectural qualities and the need for well-thought-out urbanism when there are so many development pressures. We try our best though.
(SK): Už len z veľkosti a hustoty, urbanizmus v Soule funguje dramaticky odlišne.
Can you describe your journey throughout the architecture? Where did you study? Do you continue your architectural journey on the academic field?
(SK): Môžeš opísať tvoju cestu v architektúre? Kde si študoval? Pokračuješ na akademickej pôde?
I come from an immigrant family in Canada. We moved from South Korea to Canada when I was nine. As good Asian kids, we were expected to go into medicine, law, or engineering. I was the odd kid. I only found out about architecture as a field through my high school crush, who was planning to apply to go in. Upon research I said, sure why not?. I applied, and I got accepted. She didn’t. And now I carry that mistake in my life, haha.
(SK): Pochádzam z imigrantskej rodiny z Kanady. A teraz tú chybu nosím vo svojom živote, haha.
Long story short, I did my bachelor at the University of Waterloo in Canada. During my studies there, as part of the curriculum, I went abroad to do internships at various firms in Europe. After that, I went to Harvard GSD to do my master's. I worked at a local firm in Canada upon returning for about 3 years, after which I went to China to work as a project manager in 2019. After COVID, I moved to Korea to begin my practice there.
(SK): Skrátka, bakalára som absolvoval na Univerzite Waterloo v Kanade. Počas štúdia som tam v rámci učebných osnov odišiel na stáž do rôznych firiem v Európe do zahraničia.
Did you have some experience with the architecture in Europe?
(SK): Mal si nejaké skúsenosti s architektúrou v Európe?
During my internships, I was working in firms in Denmark and the Netherlands. Like everyone I had my period of “BIG” fad as a student, and I wanted to see for myself what so-called, “Scandinavian Architecture” is for myself.
(SK): Počas stáží som pracoval vo firmách v Dánsku a Holandsku.
Can you please tell us some spicy details about the experience in Seoul?
(SK): Nejaké pikantné detaily o skúsenostiach v Soule?
Actually, I’ve only been in Korea for about two years now because of COVID 19. So in a way, I’m a foreigner there myself. I am getting used to it. Spicy? Hmm... Well, just say “Ai-go!”(a Korean way of saying, jeez) and you will get instant recognition and street cred. The intonation matters!
(SK): Jedlo je pikantné, hah. Ale vlastne som v Kórei len asi dva roky kvôli korone. Takže istým spôsobom som tam cudzinec, už si zvykám. Pikantné? Hmm... No, povedz „Ai-go!“ (kórejský spôsob, ako povedať  “jeez”) u nás okamžitý street credit. Na intonácii záleží!
You found your studio in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, with a 10 mil. Inhabitants (which is twice as much as in the whole Slovakia hah). How do you find the evolution of the character of this city?
Seoul was largely destroyed after the Korean war. After the economic boom in the 70s and 80s, it led to rapid development. The growth of the city was equivalent to the growth of its economy. This is the relentlessness of high-rise apartments that you see in Seoul.
Does this increasing density influence the new generation of Seouls architectural background? Does it influence on what actually work of architect means in such a scale?
(SK): Ovplyvňuje táto rýchlo rastúca hustota mesta novú generáciu architektonického pozadia Soulu? Ovplyvňuje to, čo vlastne práca architekta v takomto rozsahu znamená?
I think so. You either go big or small. For young offices, there’s a reactionary desire for architects to do something that is more small-scale and initimate to counteract the relentlessness of Seoul’s urbanism. It’s also because almost every project is so heavily driven by its economic parameters, and much of design is already comes predetermined; the only possible room for architectural exploration is often the materiality, if, it is even possible. A lot of practices have also resorted to doing a lot of interior design as their main platform to explore their design interests as opposed to designing buildings because there is a high demand and competition for innovative retail spaces.
(SK): Myslím, že áno. “Go big or go small”. V prípade mladých ateliérov existuje reakčná túžba, aby architekti urobili niečo menšieho a intimnejšieho, aby čelili neúnavnému urbanizmu Soulu.
What does being in such a dense city mean to you?
(SK): Čo pre teba znamená byť v takomto hustom meste?
I’m not sure. But I think excess in something always creates extremes. People in Korea are extremely competitive, work hard, and play hard. One time, there was a sunny weekend after a continuous monsoon season. I saw this kid circling round and round on his bike between an open space about the size of a bedroom. I thought, wow, that kid really wants to bike! Again, I think there is a recurring theme of efficiency here as well.
How did HYPERSPANDREL begin?
(SK): Ako vznikol HYPERSPANDREL?
As for the name, Hyperpspandrel started as a joke. I chose the name because using Asian last names didn’t sound as fancy as “Herzog de Meuron”, you know? Haha. I also didn’t want to do acronyms, OMA, BIG, 3XN, SOM, KPF, you know, the usual suspects. I wanted a name with a pizazz, hence “hyper”. Lol. Pretty shallow, I guess. There’s more to it, but that’s also part of the rationale.
As for the actual practice itself, I don’t know if I can pinpoint a specific date. I always had worked in the same zone of thought and mentality, and I never really shifted to something like, “okay, time to start an office. Go!” I like to think of my practice as an evolving set of ideas from which I opportunistically deliver certain projects, may it be a building, a drawing, or a T-shirt. Perhaps there will be a critical point where the accumulation of all the projects will naturally require an established entity, but more and more I’m less interested in the traditional modes of practice. But who knows?
Možno nastane kritický bod, kde si akumulácia všetkých projektov bude prirodzene vyžadovať etablovanú entitu, no čoraz viac ma zaujímajú tradičné spôsoby praxe. Ale kto vie.
While many of architects work in bigger companies “9 to 5” with a serious work full of drawings, you have your own studio, teach at three universities, and do memes. It must be fun, isnt it?
(SK): Zatiaľ čo mnohí architekti pracujú vo väčších firmách „9 až 5“ so serióznou prácou plnou kresieb, ty máš vlastný ateliér, učíš na troch univerzitách a robíš meme. Celkom sranda nie?
I think a better word to describe my working state of mind is, “FRANTIC”, but I’ll take fun. lol.
You have a great content on instagram. I consider it as a very organized and dynamic portfolio of yours. We actually found you there (thank you, @supraorder). Does this influence your clientele in some way?
(SK): Máš skvelý obsah na instagrame. Považujem to za vaše veľmi organizované a dynamické portfólio. My sme ťa tam vlastne našli (ďakujeme, @supraorder). Ovplyvňuje to nejakým spôsobom vašu klientelu?
Thank you! Actually, most of the time it confuses people. People often ask me something along the lines of, “so are you an architect, a graphic designer, or are you an artist?” Friends even ask me why I’m not doing “real architecture”. I’m still not sure what to call myself. I’m considering coming up with a new job title or something. The lines between disciplines are being blurred anyways, and I think we should all take advantage of that.
(SK): Ďakujem! V skutočnosti to ľudí väčšinou mätie.
Lets do some “peel talk” now. You say you are a peel specialist, what does it mean and can you describe the importance of peels in architecture?
Calling myself a peel specialist is pretty much my first attempt at trying to figure out my own identity. I became interested in peels because I realized the poche was a lie, at least in contemporary architecture. The material reality of today’s buildings is that it is mostly hollow and explicitly multi-layered. Historically, the materiality of construction dictated the fundamental characteristics of architecture. Think about classical architecture and its relationship to masonry, and modern architecture with its relationship to glass and steel. Therefore I felt important to establish a concept for this paradigm shift in how matter is organized in buildings today. Calling myself a specialist was a tongue-in-cheek way of showing my interest in this subject matter, like a facade specialist, or an HVAC specialist. The prompt was, is it possible to call yourself a specialist in an architectural idea rather than a field of building science?
You do paper architecture. It is actually a huge topic of our generation. What is your opinion about the newage NFT opportunities and influence on our work?
(SK): Robíš papierovú architektúru. Je to vlastne obrovská téma našej generácie.
I think NFT’s are super interesting. Besides all the crazy money involved in it, I’m excited by the possibility of its technology; it’s a new way to interact with the medium. currently working on an NFT project, I can’t say much, but stay tuned!
Have Rem Koolhaas seen your memes?
(SK): Videl Rem Koolhaas tvoje meme?
Probably not. Isn’t uncle Rem hanging out in the Swiss countryside and avoiding Instagram? :P When I was an intern at OMA, I was in charge of spray-painting the models. He was frustrated that I made the walls to yellow. So I don’t think he likes me.
What is your opinon about the starchitects in general?
I respect star architects. I wouldn’t dismiss their fame and celebrity. I think people like riffing on them because they are secretly just jealous. At least I did. For instance, people often criticize Gehry or Hadid because they rarely veer away from their signature style. But I think there is an enormous genius and effort that goes into developing a taste that can appeal to the masses.
(SK): Navzdory vtipom, vážim si star-architektov. Nezavrhoval by som ich slávu.
Can you describe your tape product? Is there some manifesto hidden behind this?
(SK): Môžeš opísať svoj páskový produkt? Skrýva sa za tým nejaký manifest?
It’s a form of a souvenir. It’s a way to remember the name, and perhaps also what it stands for. I’m fascinated by the idea of souvenirs. We typically consider drawings, sketches, models - virtually anything produced in architecture as only as a means to an end: to realize the building, the end goal. But those productions, in some sense, capture a certain essence of the building. So, are they not souvenirs? What’s more, you could argue that a building is also a souvenir that partially represents an architectural idea. Based on that line of thought, it becomes interesting to consider everything as a souvenir, from the entire building to masking tape that just says the name on it. We as architects are in the business of making souvenirs, a cheaper version of monuments!
(SK): Je to forma suveníru. Hovoril som o tom trochu viac v prednáške.
I’m interested in using different mediums that are in direct contrast to the building; things that are much more disposable, lightweight, and rapidly consumable. The tape is an iteration of that thought process. I guess it’s also an experiment of borrowing branding tactics, like the mere-exposure effect. The more you see it, the more it seems significant. That’s mostly how branding and marketings work. They repeatedly nail in the logo until you can’t forget it. It’s simple but effective.
Takto väčšinou funguje branding a marketing. Opakovane pribíjajú logo, kým naň nemôžete zabudnúť. Je to jednoduché, ale účinné.
Can you please tell us more about your exhibition “Coats For Philly: And for The Rest of America!” at the 2021 Seoul Biennale for Architecture and Urbanism?
(SK): Vieš nám prosím povedať viac o tvojej výstave „Coats For Philly: And the Rest of America!“ na bienále architektúry a urbanizmu v Soule v roku 2021?
The exhibition was the first testbed for translating some of my digital works out into the physical world. Coats for Philly is based on my ongoing interest in the theory of peels as the primary constituent of contemporary architecture. The idea of the coat was a playful take on how layers of facades could be reimagined as clothing on a body.
(SK): Výstava bola prvou skúškou na preklad niektorých mojich digitálnych diel do fyzického sveta. Coats for Philly vychádza z môjho trvalého záujmu o teóriu vrstvenia ako primárnej zložky súčasnej architektúry.
Aside from the details of the content, I was interested in challenging the typical format of the architectural exhibition. While nodding to the architectural tradition of plans, we wanted to showcase them in a very casual manner. We decided to showcase the plans as if you are browsing them at a clothing store, as consumable items. We even had signs saying “50% off”.
Can you please describe what is the theme of “The NEW $$$$$” / “The NEW BLING”.
The New Bling was a graduate design studio that I recently coordinated at Hanyang University. I chose luxury housing as a topic because I got bored with the idea of doing another housing studio, and wanted to explore themes that tackle the notion of real estate more explicitly. Luxury housing is really interesting because it is often less about inhabitation; it is often left empty or at least used as a vacation home since the house is used to park your wealth. This feature is most explicit in luxury homes, but also present in domesticity at large, at least in Korea where the house is equally a financial investment as it is a dwelling. I think architecture by in large has been sleeping on the wheel when it comes to dealing with this aspect of domesticity. In the studio, we tried to reimagine the domestic space if the house was explicitly designed to maximize the parameters of real estate.
(SK): The New Bling bolo absolventské dizajnérske štúdio, ktoré som nedávno koordinoval na Hanyang University.
I should mention that an equal amount of effort was made to “redesign the design studio”. I think it’s sad to see the enormous efforts of design studios abruptly end at the end of the semester. Hence, there was an attempt to incorporate branding strategies into the studio. It was a simple question: can you brand a design studio to establish an ongoing investigation? This was why we made an Instagram page and made T-shirts. We are aiming at exhibiting our work soon. This way, “a season two” of the studio becomes possible, maybe even resemble a mini “-ism”.
Thank you very much for all these answers Woo. It was a pleasure and fun having you here. And I hope our paths will cross somewhere somehow again.
(SK): Ďakujeme veľmi pekne za všetky tieto odpovede Woo. Bolo nám potešením a veľkou zábavou mať ťa medzi nami.
Thank you again for inviting me. I had a magical time in Bratislava. And I’ve yet to use that word to describe an experience in my life, until now. It was truly inspiring to see architects and students who were so passionate. Hopefully one day I can invite you to Korea / Canada!
Bolo skutočne inšpirujúce vidieť architektov a študentov, ktorí boli takí zapálení. Dúfam, že jedného dňa vás budem môcť pozvať do Kórey / Kanady!
